We don’t live in 1997 anymore and my wardrobe is thankful for that so I can tell you with confidence that the cover letter is dead. Honestly, I have read thousands of resumes and maybe four cover letters. It’s a waste of your effort and time and the attachment won’t even be opened. Instead have a snappy cover email and make it to the point. IF THE JOB POSTING SPECIFICALLY ASKS FOR A SEPARATE WRITTEN COVER LETTER THEN COMPLY, if not, steal this template:

Your advert posted on WEBSITE NAME for JOB TITLE really caught my attention. I believe my XYZ experience alongside my drive, tenacity and exemplary communications skills are a solid match to your requirements. I am confident that I will be a fantastic addition to your team. I have attached my resume, please do not hesitate to contact me with any questions you may have or to set up an interview on 778-XXX-XXXX.
